This process continues clockwise around the table until all of the pairs have been laid down. Cards are always passed one at a time, never in pairs. If he does not have a match for the card he received, he simply discards it and passes another card from his hand to the player on his left. For example, if he receives a Jack he would look through his own cards for another Jack to lay down. This player looks at the card he receives, and if he can pair it with a card from his own hand, lays the pair down on the table in front of him. The dealer then looks at his hand and passes one card face-down to the player on his left. Any leftover cards are placed face-down in the center of the table, to be used later. In some variations, if there are two or three players, each player is dealt an extra card or two so that there will be an odd number of cards in all. The game is usually played with a regular deck of 52 cards, but variations can be made using special decks containing more than one Joker card.Ĭards are dealt out face-down to the players, clockwise around the table until each player has an equal number of cards. The object of Old Maid is to avoid being the player left holding the Old Maid card at the end of the game.
